What to Expect
A passport or passport card will be needed for each member of your family attending camp.
The trip begins on Saturday, June 16. You must be scheduled to arrive at the San Diego International Airport (Terminal 2) no later than NOON PDT on Saturday, June 16. If you need to arrive early for any reason, plan on staying at a local hotel and meeting the camp at the airport on Saturday by noon. Ground transportation from the airport to the campground in Mexico is included.
Amor’s campground in Mexico is very rustic, with no running water or electricity. Water for “bucket showers” is provided at camp. The baños are non-flushing outhouses that are cleaned daily and stocked with toilet paper. Conditions of baños on the worksite can vary. The campground has 24-hour security. There will be a circus tent set up for use as a dining tent and worship tent. Tents, food, and water will be provided by Amor's La Cocina program. La Cocina provides an authentic Mexican meal experience by Amor and the Baja Ministry Planning Board. A team made up of Pastors' wives and members of their church will cook for the team. Not only does this support the local church by providing jobs, it also allows your family to connect with Mexican culture on a deeper level. La Cocina also provides folding chairs for this trip.
Once in Mexico, transportation to and from the worksites each day is included. All of the building materials and most of the tools will be waiting for you on the worksite. No power tools are allowed; everything is built with simple hand tools. Vacation Bible School materials and housewarming gifts for the families who receive homes (including a Bible) are included in your trip fees. Since we have no child care in Mexico, children should be 3 years old by June 16, 2012 to participate.
The group departs Mexico from the United States on Friday, June 22 at 10:00am, and is dropped off at the Holiday Inn Bayside for your reenter day. Rooms are not available when you arrive at the hotel, but room keys will be distributed and there will be a storage space to put your luggage. While you wait, plan on enjoying the pool, shuffleboard, the 9-hole golf putting green, poolside billiards, renting bikes, or just touring San Diego. Check in begins at 4:00pm. The hotel stay on the night of June 22 is included in your trip fees. You are responsible for the cost of any pre- or post-camp hotel stays.
The Holiday Inn Bayside is providing a continental breakfast for this trip on the morning of June 23 from 7:00am to 9:00am. The hotel also provides a shuttle service to the San Diego International Airport, which you can schedule upon your arrival at the hotel on Friday.
