Haiti

Amor has put together a small task force to look at disaster recovery and rebuilding as an aspect of Amor’s sending/equipping Ministry model. With Haiti so close, we cannot ignore our ability to make a difference. We believe that God would have us respond to the need in Haiti – not just immediately, but long-term as well.

Three Basic Responses to Disaster:

  • First Tier: Individuals who on the ground immediately following the disastrous event and focused on firefighting, human discovery/recovery, medical intervention, supply delivery and distribution, and evacuation.
  • Second Tier: Clean-up teams focused on the environment and people living in the disaster zone and are focused on trash removal, rubble clearing, preparing buildings to be reoccupied, and resource distribution.
  • Third Tier: Rebuilding teams that focus on helping people reestablish lives by building homes, schools, churches, and community buildings.

Obviously Amor is well versed in the third tier of basic responses to disaster. If Amor can be part of the second tier by mobilizing our groups and individuals to respond to the on-going needs then we can lay the ground work to have a greater impact when we move into help rebuild. Amor's passion is the local church, so we want to make sure that everything we do reinforces our Ministry model of building the local church in each community we serve within.

Amor's current desire is:

  • We need to help in Haiti – now and into the future to help the local church impact their communities.
  • Amor will be taking clean-up and rebuild teams to Haiti in the future and will be putting together specialty teams for a variety of projects.  Check our website periodically for updates.
  • Project Hope will need financial support to provide resources as they are needed: transportation, food bank, clean water, bibles, and supplies for the local church.
  • To be added to the Amor Crisis Response mailing list for updates and opportunities for individuals and groups to help us, please send us your name and email address to ACRTeam@amor.org

Amor Ministries will announce when we have opened registration for Haiti, but for now pray with us as we research opportunities in Haiti.

Cancun, Mexico

Development in Cancun is two-fold:

  1. Build a top-notch seminary that provides education to Latin American ministry workers in a Latin American context.
  2. Provide mission, education, language training, and cross-culture experiences to English-speaking participants in a Latin American context.

The campus will consist of four schools: the seminary, the language school, the retreat center, and the appropriate technology center.

  • The seminary will provide undergraduate and graduate level education in Divinity, Business, and Fine Arts, equipping the next generation of Latin American pastors for ministry in an international setting.
  • The language school will provide Spanish language instruction to English-speakers through meaningful cross-cultural interactions. Classes, taught by native speakers, will be combined with service outreach in the surrounding communities. English will also be taught to Spanish speakers in the local community.
  • The retreat center will be a place where international students can intentionally pursue God's call for their lives through seminars, small groups, and serving the local community. It will uniquely combine classroom learning and self-reflection with service opportunities and outward action.
  • The appropriate technology center will be a place where the general public can come to learn about simple and readily available tools to combat poverty.

The interaction of cultures on the campus will provide the students with a deeper understanding of missions to impact the future of the church. Through each of these elements, Amor will actively be creating jobs in the local Cancun economy by employing teachers, administrators, and general staff.

Amor’s project in Cancun will achieve Amor’s mission statement by working to "eradicate spiritual and physical poverty." (1) It will train Latin American pastors to serve the poor in their own communities through solid theological training, experiential practice, and the education of technology appropriate to their communities. (2) It will bring people together from around the world to collaborate their efforts to impact the church and to serve the poor in the Cancun area through working with the local church. (3) It will train and educate English-speaking participants to serve the poor in other locations around the world and in their own communities. (4) It will create jobs in the local economy through work at the campus. (5) It will provide vital vocational training for locals living in a tourist economy through teaching English as a second language. (6) It will provide housing and a base of operations for missions groups reaching out into the local community.

Amor’s main ministry function has been to "send" missionaries to fight poverty. We have been sending missionaries to build houses in Mexico, and now South Africa and an Apache Reservation in Arizona, for 30 years. We feel called to "equip" our participants and other missionaries, through the hands-on teaching of our curriculum, for a life of service that endures well beyond their time with us. Amor’s campus will allow Spanish-speaking pastors to receive affordable undergraduate and graduate level education to take back to their local congregations and communities. It will also provide a transformative experience for English-speakers through cross-cultural interactions and a deeper understanding of God's heart for the poor. Embedded within our Ministry is our mission to work with and through the local church. We believe there is no better way to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ than to support and strengthen His church to more effectively fight poverty.

As Amor builds the Cancun campus, we are continuing to investigating the need and how we can build up the local church in this area. We hope to be on the ground actively working in Cancun soon. Check back soon for our launch date.
