Finding Sabbath Rest in the Busy Christmas Season

Sabbath Rest

“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” St. Augustine

The Christmas holiday season, which is meant to be a time of restful anticipation, often turns into the busiest weeks of our whole year. The parties, crafts, concerts, shopping, wrapping, it all seems like so much. How does this Advent calendar fit into an already busy Holiday season?

We call the daily reflections a “Disruption” because they are meant to break our attention away from distractions of the Holidays and focus us on the reason we celebrate Christmas. We won’t be able to focus in a new direction until we first break the attraction of the old.

How do we add an activity like this Advent devotion to our busy lives and still find rest in the Christmas season? I think it is kind of like tithing. We give God the beginning of our day, trusting that he will provide for our needs or give us clarity about what needs to be dropped in order to attain balance.

We pray that this season of Advent will help you find rest, to focus on the things that have lasting significance, and to create memories that will stay will you for years to come.
